Project IMPACT:Clinical Decision Support in Critical Care
Gordon D. Brown The Setting Leaders of the critical care unit at Western
Metropolitan Medical Center recommend to the executive staff to acquire access
to Project IMPACT, a database that contains descriptions of intensive care unit
(ICU) patients, their care, and outcomes. This recommendation is appropriate
for the institution’s commitment to quality of patient care and is championed
by the director of the critical care unit, who holds a national leadership
position at the Society of Critical Care Medicine. The critical care unit’s
physicians also support Project IMPACT and are similarly involved with the
Society of Critical Care Medicine, which developed the database for
Tri-Analytics (see Project IMPACT was
acquired by the Cerner Corporation as a strategy for collaborating with
physician groups. Other products of the company include the following: •
IMPACTessentialT, a registry
that includes data elements that describe patient demographics, admitting diagnoses,
condition and acuity, lengths of stay in ICU and hospital, and condition on
dis- charge • IMPACTsepsisT, a registry for severe sepsis in ICUs The goal of
Project IMPACT is to provide a database for monitor- ing and reporting critical
care treatment and outcomes for subscribing institutions. The database provides
a centralized, efficient, and consistent means for collecting and analyzing
data on ICU patients. A better under- standing of these occurrences and the
performance of each center and physician will enable staff to evaluate
equipment and training, improve practices, and ultimately improve outcomes.
More efficient treatment of critical care patients is needed given that their
care represents 14 percent of acute care costs annually.  Western takes the recommendation and subscribes to Project
IMPACT as a strategy to boost clinical quality. Subscription enables the
institution to access software that establishes data standards, checks for data
quality, and automatically prepares data for submission to the central
