Part A

(300-word minimum to 600-word maximum)

Hubris comes from the Greek “hybris” which means to humiliate or degrade. According to Aristotle “hubris consists in doing and saying things that cause shame to the victim” and the rich are hubristic because they “think they are better than other people.” Apply the term hubris to Claudius in the play “Hamlet.” Write an essay with the following components:

  • an introductory paragraph without repeating the prompt
  • a paragraph citing text with a narrative illustrating Claudius’ hubris
  • a paragraph explaining why and how the character’s action is hubristic
  • a final concluding statement without repeating your earlier narrative

Part B

(300-word minimum to 600-word maximum)

Farce contains sudden and swift reversals of action where characters that are up suddenly are down, and characters that are down suddenly are up. Thornton Wilder states the journey often leads the “aspirations of the young for a fuller, freer participation in life.” Identify a scene from “The Miser” and describe a sudden farcical reversal of action propelling characters forward towards greater aspiration. Write an essay with the following components:

  • an introductory paragraph without repeating the prompt
  • a paragraph citing text with a narrative illustrating a sudden farcical reversal
  • a paragraph explaining why and how the citation leads to the character’s aspiration
  • a final concluding statement without repeating your earlier narrative
